The output is a research report: p-value, win rates at multiple time horizons, sample size, mean return, and a verdict on whether the signal is statistically significant. It answers the question: should I build a strategy around this signal at all?

That question comes before Nvestiq's question. If the signal has no statistical edge — if the backtest returns a p-value of 0.4 — automating it is just a faster way to lose money on a pattern that doesn't predict anything.

The sequence that makes sense

Quant research desks separate the research function from the engineering function deliberately. Researchers ask whether a signal has edge. Engineers build the system to trade it.
